The Origin of the Sarangi (सारंगी)- Sadangi (षडंगी) (ষড়ঙ্গী) Surname, found in Odisha, West Bengal, and other states of India and abroad.
Historically, surnames evolved as a way to sort people into groups - by occupation, place of origin, clan affiliation, patronage, parentage, adoption, physical characteristics, etc. Surnames (उपनाम/कुलनाम )and titles (उपाधि/पदवी)or decorations used along with the proper names commonly added at the end of the names - are either genealogical or professional and sometimes topographical.
The genealogical surname has been in use from generation to generation and is generally family names some of which may even have been personal names. Professional names have also been adopted as family names and are regularly used as surnames.
It has been a practice for quite a few centuries to award titles (उपाधि/पदवी)to persons who occupy positions of distinction in intelligence, learning, wealth, honor, etc. Persons who have rendered meritorious service to the country have also been awarded titles that have gone down from generation to generation and thus got absorbed as family names or surnames.
Indian history from pre-Mughal days has shown that the ruling Hindu Kings had awarded titles to persons and families for either meritorious service to the country or for leadership in society. This practice has been followed by the Pathan and the Mughal rulers and by their successors, the British as well. Even in independent India, the Presidential awards on Republic day are a continuation of the old practice of honoring persons for their service to the country.
Surname and caste.
A surname alone does not determine caste. Caste identity is shaped by various factors, including family background, social context, and cultural traditions. Many surnames are shared across different communities, and their significance can vary based on region and historical context.

The term "Sarangi" is a fusion of two words: "Sara," meaning entire, and "Angi," signifying body. Some scholars also suggest that the word "Sarangi" might have originated from "Sarang," a Sanskrit term for a spotted deer.
Sarangi surname (caste) in Nepal:-
In Nepal, the Sarangi holds significance as a crucial classical instrument. The term "Sarangi" is thought to be derived from two Nepali words: "sau," meaning "seven," and "rang," meaning "color." This chordophone is played by bowing, and individuals who play the Sarangi for vocal accompaniment are referred to as Sarangis. These musicians, known as hereditary musicians, have been actively contributing to vocal performances for centuries in Nepal. While Sarangis are predominantly found in Nepal, they are rarely encountered abroad.
The surname "Sarangi" or "Sadangi" is associated with Utkal Brahmins, primarily located in Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and occasionally in other regions of India and abroad. Renowned for their honesty, piety, and nobility, the Sarangi Brahmins are highly revered within their community. They are known for their deep devotion to the deity God Jagannath.

Origin of Sarangi (सारंगी)/Sadangi (षडंगी) surname among Utkala Brahmins:-
According to a widely accepted belief, Utkala Brahmins who delved into the study of the six Vedangas were bestowed with the titles Sadangi or Sarangi. Over time, this honorific title transformed into a hereditary surname (उपनाम/कुलनाम), passed down through subsequent generations. Importantly, it is crucial to note that Sarangi is not a caste or a family but a distinguished title (उपाधि/पदवी). It solely represents an honorific designation, akin to a recognition of scholarly achievement, rather than a specific lineage or social group.

The Vedanga (Sanskrit: वेदाङ्ग Vedanga, "limbs of the Veda") are six auxiliary disciplines of Hinduism that developed in ancient times and have been connected with the study of the Vedas. These are:
1.Shiksha (siksa): phonetics, phonology, pronunciation. This auxiliary discipline has focussed on the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, accent, quantity, stress, melody, and rules of the euphonic combination of words during a Vedic recitation.
2.Chandas (chandas): prosody. This auxiliary discipline has focused on the poetic meters, including those based on a fixed number of syllables per verse, and those based on a fixed number of morae perverse.
3.Vyakarana (vyakaraṇa): grammar and linguistic analysis. This auxiliary discipline has focussed on the rules of grammar and linguistic analysis to establish the exact form of words and sentences to properly express ideas.
4.Nirukta (nirukta): etymology, explanation of words, particularly those that are archaic and have ancient uses with unclear meaning. This auxiliary discipline has focused on linguistic analysis to help establish the proper meaning of the words, given the context they are used in.
5.Kalpa (kalpa): ritual instructions. This field focused on standardizing procedures for Vedic rituals, rites of passage rituals associated with major life events such as birth, wedding, and death in the family, as well as discussing the personal conduct and proper duties of an individual in different stages of his life.
6.Jyotisha (Jyotish): Auspicious time for rituals, astrology, and astronomy. This auxiliary Vedic discipline focused on timekeeping.

Faith in God's Justice:
A devotee stands with steadfast heart,
Bound to their God, never to part.
In storm or sun, through joy and pain,
Their faith unbroken, a sacred chain.
No shadow of doubt, no tempest’s might,
Can dim their trust or steal their light.
For in their soul, a flame does burn,
A truth so pure, to which they return.
Seated in prayer or walking alone,
They carry their God, a cornerstone.
Neither bent by time nor worn by strife,
It shapes their path, it molds their life.
An eternal bond, a love profound,
A faith that echoes, a sacred sound.
Oh, devotee, your heart so true,
A beacon of light, a celestial hue.
Your faith in God’s justice guides your way,
Unmoved, unshaken, come what may.
